Hi Friends,

The IRS has announced a significant change that will affect how many taxpayers make their payments. As of September 30, 2025, the IRS will no longer accept paper checks for certain tax payments, including balances due and estimated tax payments. This shift is part of a broader effort to improve processing times, increase accuracy, and reduce the risk of lost or delayed mail.

For many of you, this may be a change in habit, especially if you’ve always mailed a check with a voucher. The IRS ending paper checks 2025 But the transition doesn’t have to be stressful. In fact, it can make things easier once you’re set up.

Why You Should Create an IRS Online Account

I strongly recommend that you set up an IRS online account if you haven’t done so already. This is becoming the most reliable way to:

- Make tax payments quickly and securely

- View balances, payment history, and notices

- Access transcripts

- Update personal information

- Confirm that payments have posted correctly

It’s an increasingly important tool, and with the IRS moving away from paper checks, having this account in place will save you time and help you stay organized.

Set Up Your Identity Protection PIN

While you’re setting up your account, I also encourage you to obtain an Identity Protection PIN. This is a six-digit number the IRS issues each year to prevent someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security number. Once you opt in, no return can be filed under your identity without that PIN.

It’s one of the strongest safeguards the IRS offers against tax-related identity theft.

What You Should Do Next

If you’ve traditionally mailed your payments, now is a good time to make the switch. Setting up your IRS online account and securing your IP PIN will ensure you're prepared and that your tax payments are handled smoothly going forward.
